An installation showcasing the wisdom and craft
of creators who confront the power of timepieces

This exhibition has ended.

In the fall of 2022, Seiko launched the Seiko Seed project—a series of activities that allow people to experience the wonders of engineering and design behind watches. The Forest of Mechanisms was the inaugural exhibition of this project. With each iteration, this exhibition has further explored the allure and new possibilities of mechanical watch mechanisms. In fall of 2025, Forest of Mechanisms will move from Harajuku to Aoyama, Tokyo. Its fourth installment will showcase a diverse range of works inspired by the intricate movements and evocative sounds of mechanical watches.
This time, designers of Seiko Watch Corporation, artist Kosei Komatsu, the engineering design collective Spline Design Hub, and designer Kensho Miyoshi will explore, conceptualize, and express the appeal of mechanical watches through their respective fields of expertise.
The fourth installment of Forest of Mechanisms will be filled with surprises and opportunities for discovery, inviting visitors to experience the vibrant rhythm of mechanical watches in fresh and unexpected ways.
Born in Japan in 1981, Kosei Komatsu is an artist who began creating works focused on natural physical phenomena as a member of the artist group "Atelier OMOYA" after graduating from the Department of Architecture at Musashino Art University in 2004 and completing his postgraduate studies at Tokyo University of the Arts in 2006. He became an independent artist in 2014.
Starting with an interest in "floating" and "birds," Komatsu currently develops works that focus on "lightness," "movement," and "light." He has exhibited his works in museums and also creates spatial productions in large commercial facilities.
In 2022, he was appointed as a specially appointed associate professor in the Department of Architecture at Musashino Art University.
Founded in 2015, we are a design-engineering studio grounded in the philosophy of seamlessly bridging human sensibility and technology. Our practice spans diverse fields, including installation production, product design, collaborative research with academic institutions, and the development of new products.
At the heart of our work is a design-engineering perspective that fluidly moves between technology and aesthetics, hardware and software, and logic and intuition. Bringing together a wide range of expertise, we explore and bring into form new kinds of value that have yet to be seen.
Kensho Miyoshi (b. 1990) holds a PhD from the Royal College of Art, London, following a BEng and an MEng in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the University of Tokyo. His doctoral thesis was awarded the Best Thesis Prize by Anhalt University of Applied Sciences, Germany. His work spans creative practice and academic research on movement, embodiment, and poetics. He is a certified Buteyko breathing instructor (Buteyko Clinic International) and part-time lecturer at Showa Medical University. He co-leads the experimental design studio POETIC CURIOSITY, and in 2023, founded Shinkokyu, Ltd., a company dedicated to breathing-centred design.
